One of the most common questions directed at an Exercise Physiologist is “How is this different from Physiotherapy”. Hopefully after reading this blog post, you have more of an understanding about EP’s, and how we work alongside Physiotherapists in order to provide the best health outcomes for our clients.
Exercise Physiologists specialise in exercise prescription to help manage and treat different chronic health conditions and injuries. At West Coast Neuro, this is focused towards tailored exercise interventions for those with neurological health conditions. Physiotherapists may also do this in the neuro scope, but also will work in the space of equipment prescription, wheelchair / seating modifications, manual therapy and more acute phases of rehabilitation. Like all allied health professionals, there will be a crossover between treatment, and we like to ensure a team approach to ensure that the best treatment is provided within the appropriate scope of practice.
Here are some of the considerations that help Exercise Physiology services at West Coast Neuro to achieve the best possible outcomes:
Customised Intervention:
We aim to prescribe exercise interventions tailored to the individual, and used up to date evidence based recommendations for their health condition whilst considering factors such as mobility limitations, strength, cognitive function and the relevant goals. Overall, we are aiming to ensure the intervention is tailored towards enhancing neuroplasticity to improve their lives.
Holistic approach:
We consider it important to address not only the presenting neurological condition, but also the comorbid health conditions that a person may have, along with their psychological and emotional wellbeing. We use exercise as our treatment modality for a holistic approach to healthcare.
Ongoing support:
Living with a neurological health condition is something that a person will manage for the rest of their lives, and their presentation may change over time. We aim to ensure that their exercise programs are adjusted accordingly, and specific to their needs.
